Weir has named Marc Cameron as president of its minerals division, with his appointment taking effect on 26 October, Canadian Mining Journal reported. Cameron will also become a member of the group executive. Originally from New Brunswick, he will be based in Fort Worth when he takes up the position.
Cameron brings more than 25 years of leadership experience spanning mining operations, heavy equipment, technology-based solutions and international commercial responsibilities. His career includes senior positions at both Caterpillar and Rio Tinto, giving him experience across mine operations and the equipment, services and technology supplied to mining customers.
His most recent role was senior vice-president of resource industries at Caterpillar. According to the appointment report, his work there included developing the business through integrated solutions and services focused on customers’ needs. He also oversaw the expansion of Caterpillar’s offering in data-driven mining technology and software, a part of his background highlighted alongside his operational and commercial experience.
Before joining Caterpillar, Cameron spent close to 20 years at Rio Tinto in a range of operational and management posts. Those included managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott and president and chief operating officer of the Diavik diamond mine in Yellowknife. The roles form part of the mining operations experience cited in the announcement of his move to Weir.
Welcoming the appointment, Weir chief executive Andrew Neilson pointed to Cameron’s combination of mining, global commercial and technology expertise. Neilson said that background equipped Cameron to understand customers and the difficulties they encounter. He also expressed confidence that the incoming divisional president could draw on the minerals business’s existing technology portfolio and customer relationships to support faster growth. Those expectations were presented as Weir management’s assessment of the appointment, rather than independently established outcomes.
